The Circularis BioCluster is the clustering initiative of four European projects: VALORISH and its brother project, ONE EARTH (Project ID: 101135559, coordinated by the University of Bologna), PROMISEANG (Project ID: 101112378, Coordinated by the University of Vigo) and MARMADE (Project ID: 101213231, Coordinated by the University of Camerino).
The Horizon Europe topics under which the cluster members are funded are:
Cluster Member: MARMADE Project
Website: https://marmade-project.eu/
Description: MARMADE aims to develop sustainable, high-value bio-based food and feed ingredients from marine biomass, focusing on underutilised crustacean residues (shrimp shells and blue crabs) and seaweed. The project seeks to establish efficient and scalable biorefinery processes to extract a wide range of functional ingredients and to develop innovative food and feed prototypes with enhanced nutritional, functional, and sensory properties.
Cluster Member: VALORISH Project
Website: https://www.valorish.eu/
Description: VALORISH is designing and validating an innovative circular biorefinery that converts fish industry by-products into high-value compounds like protein hydrolysates and fish oil. Through the integration of advanced computational tools and sustainability assessments, the project paves the way for a zero-waste approach to bio-based production.
Cluster Member: PROMISEANG
Project
Website: https://promiseang-project.eu/
Description: The project’s objective is to develop novel alternative proteins from marine underexploited sources (marine invertebrate and macroalgae discards and industrial biowastes) through biomass fermentation (solid-state and submerge processes), generating new microbial protein biomass, meeting market requirements for food, feed, and non-food (biomedicine, pharma and cosmetic) bio-based applications. A technically and economically viable biorefinery for microbial-based protein production will be demonstrated during the project, enabling higher production yields, reduced production periods, minimized environmental impacts, diminish the imports, and reduced production costs for proteins.
Cluster Member: ONE EARTH
Project
Website: https://www.oneearth-project.eu/
Description: The project aims to develop and evaluate innovative bio-based solutions for producing nutraceuticals, cosmetics, bio-adhesives, fertilizers, and aquaculture feed by leveraging residual animal biomass. ONE EARTH seeks to establish integrated circular value chains by valorising marine biomass for terrestrial applications and repurposing terrestrial biomass for aquaculture, fostering a sustainable and self-reinforcing carbon cycle.
SUBMARINER Network coordinates several working groups relevant to seafood side-stream valorization. The working groups cover focus areas such as aquaculture, fisheries, algae (macro and micro) and mussels.
Check them out and let’s start the conversation on how to make the best use of aquatic resources!
BlueBioMatch, the Blue Bioeconomy Hub, is a collaborative platform designed to support progress within the blue bioeconomy.
BlueBioMatch functions as a matchmaking community for diverse stakeholders, ranging from students, startups and SMEs to researchers, policymakers, and funders. It is managed by the SUBMARINER Network but driven by the community engagement of its users.
On BlueBioMatch, members can showcase their projects and products, find and offer mentoring and share opportunities in the blue bioeconomy. Functions include:
FOODIMAR hosts the Seafood Side-Stream Valorization Working Group, which organizes meetings and seafood side-stream focused discussions and networking opportunities.
